hahaha...feel safe~!!
We met in a little in a little head-on collision. Now I’m Ted’s best and only friend. When I draw my curtains in the morning he’s there. He sent me his hair cuttings, and a bathmat lovingly woven from navel fluff. He likes to call often and say things like: “You have toothpaste on your left cheek” and “I like those boxers you’re wearing”. For my birthday, he sent me a half sheep and 27 emotionally-fraught mix tapes. He is intimately acquainted with the contents of my bin. I know he’s touched his earbuds. And he likes to knit things for me too. Things like ponchos, cat suits and eye patches. To think, if I’d been driving a Mercedes-Benz with Lane Assist, that nifty accident avoidance system, we never would’ve met. No accident, no new friend and no hidden camera in the shower.
We met by accident, me and Janine. She was in my blind spot and I didn’t even see her. Now we see each other the whole time. Right off the bat, she told me “I can’t wait to mother your children”, and I said “How did you get into my house?” Now she whistles love songs to me as she cleans her gun. I think she’s had me micro chipped because I once woke up groggy on a vet’s table and because I beep every time I exit a shop. Airport security has become unbearable. She eats buffalo wings without spitting out the bones. None of her shirts have sleeves. She knows stuff about me that I haven’t even told her. Mostly banking codes. And I’m pretty sure she sleeps with her eyes open. To think, if I’d been driving a Mercedes-Benz with Blind Spot Assist, one of their smart accident avoidance systems, we never, never would’ve met. No accident, no relationship and no taxidermy Tuesdays.
Toby von Hubert and I met quite by accident. I was his first ever human friend. It all began when he gave me a selection of cheeses lovingly made by his own hand. To say thank you, I agreed to one Cluedo game. Now there isn’t a night that goes by that I don’t get guilted into an evening with Colonel Mustard. Toby used to be a prolific hand model. I’ve seen all his work, left and right – ’89 through 2010. Sometimes, when I’m at the office, he sneaks into my home and sews elbow patches onto all my Jackets. He say’s they’re a sign of breeding. Even Toby’s bathing costume has elbow patches. Thing is, if I’d been driving a Mercedes-Benz with Attention Assist, that smart driver fatigue prevention system, we never would’ve met. No accident, no blood brotherhood and no Colonel Mustard in the conservatory with the candlestick.

Following up on the successful launch of Volkswagen BlueMotion Technologies via the innovative Fun Theory platform, Volkswagen and DDB created the Fun Theory Award, a competition which ultimately saw 699 amazing entries from more than 35 countries. The winner was the Speed Camera Lottery, created and submitted by San Francisco’s Kevin Richardson, a games producer for NickelodeonKids whose idea was based around rewarding those who obeyed the speed limit with the money raised through fining those lead foot drivers who exceed it. In October 2010, the idea became reality and was tested in Stockholm, in collaboration with NTF (The Swedish road transport authority). Speed Camera Lottery worked on many levels: the average speed was reduced by 22%. Media ranging from ABC to the BBC Worldwide Service covered the campaign, the competition and the winning idea. Even better Speed Camera Lottery helped Volkswagen continue to boost share and sales in Sweden. From January to June 2010 Volkswagen market share increased almost 4% to 12.9% while sales grew by 5.8% compared to an increase of 3.9% for the overall market compared to the first half of 2009. In the eco car segment alone, Volkswagen saw market share leap from about 8% to nearly 15% proving another theory at DDB: Creating ideas that people want to play with, participate in and pass along is good for business.

Volkswagen, which translates as “the People’s Car”, is collaborating with their fans to create the third installment of the recently launched “Drive Until…” campaign for the Golf. The idea is get fans involved through Facebook, letting them be a part of the creative and production process in real time. The initiative not only helps the fans create the kind of spot they’d like to see, it also gives people a glimpse “under the hood” to see the process involved in making a television ad. The first two advertisements in the series follow a man, in his early 30s, as he takes two very important steps in his life. The first installment, “Courage”, shows the man driving his Golf around the block repeatedly, as he mentally prepares to propose to his girlfriend. When he makes up his mind and parks the car in front of his girlfriend’s house, the words “Drive until you find the courage.” appear on the screen. The second spot, “Time”, shows the same man driving around in his Golf with his three best friends the night before the wedding. As the man prepares to head into the church, the words “Drive until it’s time.” appear. In order to complete the trilogy, Volkswagen Canada will ask fans what the next chapter in the “Drive Until…” series should be. From there, Volkswagen and advertising agency Red Urban will work with the fans to generate the script, make decisions on actors, music and a number of other key decisions.

Chevrolet Brazil used a set of 2000 individually signed print advertisements to promote the launch of the Chevrolet Omega Fittipaldi, a car tuned by legendary Emerson Fittipaldi (2x F1 champion, F-Indy champion and 2x Indy 500 winner). WMcCann Brazil created a series of 2,000 magazine ads autographed by the driver, sent to selected magazine subscribers. Each ad had an exclusive URL with a video of the pilot autographing the magazines. See the message designed for Cannes by using the number 1500.
